Dear Family of Sonia Sotomayor Middle School at Adelphi,
It is an honor to introduce myself as the newly appointed Principal for Sonia Sotomayor Middle School at Adelphi. I have been a member of the Prince Georges' County Public School District (PGCPS) for 8 years where I’ve served as an ESOL educator, in numerous teacher leader roles, and Assistant Principal. My experience at the high school level provides me with a unique understanding of the challenges experienced by rising 9th graders and will inform how an environment is created to better prepare students for the transition. Additionally, I have served as ESOL Curriculum Writer and advocate as I’ve been a guest speaker for Internationally Trained Teachers.
I am a native of the Southwest region of Puerto Rico, but attended school in Europe as well. I have a real passion for learning and creating equitable environments for all students. Communication is a key ingredient to building strong relationships, so I plan to leverage my ability to speak Spanish, Italian, English and French to better connect with stakeholders. During my free time, I enjoy traveling, a hobby that has taken me to several continents such as Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
I am excited to continue my journey as a transformational leader. As the founding principal I look to collaborate with stakeholders to build a learning community of inclusion, equity, and engagement; foster a community of care in which everyone feels appreciated and supported to ensure all students become socially responsible lifelong learners. I look forward to meeting each of you during upcoming activities to include a “Meet and Greet” with parents and community members.
Respectfully,
Leroy Alicea-Cabassa, Ed. D
Principal
