Assistant Principal's Message

Dear Scotchtown Hills Community,

It is with great excitement and gratitude that I introduce myself as a member of the school community. I am honored to have the opportunity to partner with our students, families, and staff as we work together to create a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where every child can “Unleash their potential”.

I was born and raised in Arizona and am a first-generation Pakistani American Muslim. My educational journey began with earning a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Creative Writing in 2012 from the University of Arizona. Soon after graduation, I moved to Maryland to pursue a dual master's degree in Elementary and Special Education from Lesley University while serving as a teaching fellow with Urban Teachers. I began my career teaching as a 1st grade teacher and Special Education Resource teacher at an early childhood charter school in Washington, D.C., while completing my master's degree in 2014.

In 2016, I joined Prince George's County Public Schools, where I taught in the Comprehensive Special Education Program at Francis Scott Key Elementary School and Gaywood Elementary School. In 2022, I was promoted and began serving as an Assistant Principal at Chillum Elementary School before transitioning to my current role as Assistant Principal at Scotchtown Hill. This school year marks my 14th year in education, and throughout my career, I have remained committed to ensuring that every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Outside of school, I enjoy volunteering as a youth leader and mentor within my religious community. Spending time with my family is especially important to me, whether we are traveling, trying new foods, or expressing our creativity together. These experiences have shaped my belief that learning happens both inside and outside the classroom, and that strong relationships are at the heart of every successful school community.

I believe that education has the power to transform lives, and I am passionate about inspiring students to discover their strengths, embrace challenges, and become lifelong learners. I look forward to partnering with our dedicated staff and families to provide meaningful opportunities that support the academic, social, and emotional growth of every child.

Thank you for welcoming me into this wonderful school community. I am excited for all that we will accomplish together and look forward to getting to know each of you throughout the school year.

Warmly,

Mrs. Taniya Qureshi
Assistant Principal
