Dear Parents & Guardians:

The Administration & Staff is excited to welcome you to the 2022-2023 school year! We hope that you have had a fun and productive summer. We are looking forward to our students returning and filling them with an enthusiasm for learning. We will renew our commitment to a safe, responsible and respectful learning environment where all children will have opportunities to be successful.

Prince George’s County has restructured all of the Alternative Schools. All of the Alternative Schools have new names. With that, we are no longer Green Valley Academy. Our new school name is Non Traditional Program- Middle, and we will serve students grades 6-8. Our theme this year is “The Beginning of a New Tomorrow full of Promise!” This theme is aligned with the new mission and vision of the non traditional programs and how we will service students. We will begin to use  restorative practices to strengthen students’ connections to both staff and other students.

The Non Tradtional Programs will have Coordinating Supervisors that will serve in the same capacity as Principals. My name is Phalena Washington, and I will serve as your child’s Coordinating Supervisor. Also, the NTPs will have Instructional Specialists that will serve in the same capacity as Assistant Principals. Mr. Oliver Bridges will serve as your child’s Instructional Specialist. We have a Community Schools Coordinator Mr, Brandon Thompson who will support our students and families.

For our returning parents and guardians, we are enlisting your continued support. To our new families, we are looking forward to meeting you and establishing a rapport with you. The success of all students will be the result of a collaborative effort; the school, home and of course, the students. The Non Traditional Program-Middle’s Administration, Security & Staff will continue to ensure that your child is provided with a safe and orderly environment that is conducive to learning.

Before instruction begins, we must establish routines and procedures that will enable us to maintain safety and order in the school. We are still a uniform school. Students being in uniform allows us to identify Non Traditional Program-Middle students as well as it allows us to identify those students and individuals that do not belong in the school. To that end, ALL students MUST be in uniform every day beginning the FIRST day of school. Parents and guardians we want to thank you in advance for your support and ensuring that your child is in uniform on the first day and every day.

Parents & Guardians, it is equally important that your child attends school every day and on time. Daily school attendance is the law and is necessary in order for your child to receive  quality instruction. We want to thank you in advance for ensuring that your child attends school daily and comes prepared with their chromebook, textbooks and school supplies.

Once established routines and procedures are in place, instruction can occur. The Administration and Instructional Leadership Team will ensure that learning is taking place in ALL classrooms. We will monitor instruction to ensure that teachers are providing academically rigorous and engaging lessons that are aligned with local, state and national standards. Additionally, we will have a School Support Team consisting of a Professional School Counselor, Behavioral Intervention Specialist, Pupil Personnel Worker, School Psychologist, Student Advocate, School Social Worker and Mental Health Clinician that will ensure that your child is receiving wrap around services to support their Social Emotional Learning and Mental Health.

Finally, Parents & Guardians, you will be able to access your child’s academics and attendance progress through the SchoolMAX Parent Portal. Additionally, we will keep the lines of communication open with you through updates on the school’s website, emails, letters, phone calls and meetings.

Middle School matters as we are setting the foundation for what is to come in high school and beyond!

This will be a great year, and I look forward to working with you!

In Service,

Phalena M. Washington
Coordinating Supervisor
