Dr.Gorman Brown was always destined to be an Educator. Currently the Principal of Charles Herbert Flowers High School, he has spent the last twenty-six years being committed to the families of Prince George’s County. For the past eighteen years, he has been Principal of two of the most successful secondary schools in the district.
Principal Brown grew up the child of educators in Chicago, Illinois. Though he never thought he wanted to be a teacher, he spent time as a youth helping other children in his community connect with learning and achieve academic success. His family embraced this charge and their home quickly became the neighborhood homework and tutoring center. Due to their efforts many of his peers became the first in their family to graduate from high school.
Having always had an affinity for science and math, Gorman moved to Washington DC in 1987 to attend Howard University majoring in Chemistry, graduating with a B.S. in 1992. After spending five years working in the public and private sector, he became a Math and Science teacher at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School in 1997. Because of his passion for math, science and motivating at-risk youth, he was promoted quickly through the ranks becoming an Assistant Principal at Suitland High School in 2002 and Principal at Walker Mill Middle School in 2005. Due to his visionary leadership, Walker Mill became one of the highest performing middle schools in our district and the only one to exit the failing schools designation after his third year. He was appointed Principal of Charles Herbert Flowers High School upon the retirement of Principal Emeritus Helena Nobles-Jones in 2012.
Since his appointment at Charles Herbert Flowers High School, he has continued his commitment to ensuring that every child has the chance to excel everyday. His commitment to improving student achievement has led the 9th grade promotion rate increase from 65% the year prior to taking to the helm to 90% at the end of the 2019 school year. During the same time, the graduation rate improved to 91%. His school was recognized by the Steve Harvey Awards as Best high School in 2015 during their annual “hoodie” awards.
Gorman lives within walking distance of Flowers High School with his wife Chalana, also an educator, and his three children KaMar , Imani and Gorman IV . He is an active member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and leads the youth-based initiatives for his home Chapter. His family worships and is active in Ministry work at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden.
