Principal Barker's Weekly Message

Principal's Note 12/07/2025

Hello Wildcat Families,

I hope you and your loved ones are doing well as we begin a new week at Northwestern High School. Your ongoing partnership is essential to the success of our students, and I want to express my appreciation for the ways you continue to stay engaged with our school community.

As we move through the school year, two-way communication remains a critical part of ensuring every student is supported. We encourage you to stay connected with your child’s teachers, counselors, and our administrative team whenever you have questions or concerns. Together, we can create the conditions that help every Wildcat thrive.

Please remember to check ParentVUE daily to monitor your child’s grades, missing assignments, class schedules, and attendance. Consistent monitoring helps students stay on track and allows families to address concerns early.

Attendance continues to be a major priority. If your student is absent, please be sure to provide an excuse note or documentation to the attendance office. Every absence must be accounted for, and your timely follow-up ensures accurate records and continuous student support.

This week’s newsletter includes several important updates, reminders, and upcoming events. I encourage you to take a few moments to review the information and stay connected to the many ways your student can engage and excel here at the Wildcat Den.

Thank you for your partnership, your communication, and your commitment to helping us #UnleashTheROAR each day.

Wishing you a positive and productive week ahead in the Den! ๐Ÿพ

Hola Familias Wildcat,

๐Ÿพ

Principal's Note 11/09/2025

Hello Wildcat Families,

This Tuesday, November 11, we will host Parent-Teacher Conferences from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. (with a lunch break from 12:00–12:30 p.m.). We encourage all parents and guardians to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with teachers, discuss academic progress, and strengthen the partnership that supports your student’s success. Please use this link to sign up with specific teachers.

As we move further into the second quarter, please continue to monitor your child’s attendance closely. Every day counts! Students must attend all classes on time. If your child must be absent, please ensure that a written excuse note is submitted to the attendance office to document a legal absence.

We also ask that families take a moment to review the PGCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook together. It’s important that all students understand expectations regarding conduct, attendance, and safety. Please remember that Northwestern is not an open campus, students are not permitted to leave school grounds during the day without administrative authorization. If you are picking your student up early, you must enter the main office and follow the proper sign-out procedures

Thank you for your continued support in helping us maintain a safe, structured, and academically focused learning environment for all Wildcats.

With appreciation,

Hola Familias Wildcat:

Directora Barker๐Ÿพ

Principal's Note 11/02/2025

Hello Wildcat Parents and Students,

We’ve officially entered the second quarter of the school year, thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring our Wildcats stay focused, consistent, and engaged every day. Attendance matters! Each class period counts, and every absence impacts learning progress and overall success. Parent-teacher conference day is November 11th.

As a reminder, Northwestern High School is a closed campus. Once students arrive, they are expected to remain on campus throughout the school day and attend all scheduled classes. Students should not leave the building or school grounds without prior approval or proper check-out procedures. This policy helps us maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone.

Additionally, as daylight saving time ends and the days grow shorter, we encourage all students to be mindful of safety when traveling to and from school or activities. With earlier sunsets, visibility decreases in the late afternoon and evening. Please review these important reminders with your student:

  • Stay Aware: Always be alert to your surroundings and avoid distractions like phones or headphones while walking.

  • Be Visible: Wear light-colored or reflective clothing if you’ll be out during dusk or dark hours.

  • Walk in Groups: There’s safety in numbers—whenever possible, walk with a friend or in a group.

  • Use Safe Routes: Stick to well-lit, populated paths and avoid shortcuts through isolated areas.

  • Check In: Let a friend or family member know your route and expected arrival time.

Let’s continue to look out for one another and make safety, attendance, and responsibility our top priorities this season.

Stay safe, stay smart, and take care of our Wildcat community.

~Principal Barker ๐Ÿพ

Greetings Wildcat Families,

As we celebrate Spirit Week and Homecoming, let’s remember that school pride and responsibility go hand in hand. While this week is filled with fun and excitement, all students are expected to adhere to the PGCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook at all times.

Please keep in mind the following expectations:

  • Dress Code: All students must follow the PGCPS dress code guidelines, even during Spirit Week theme days.

  • Attendance: Students are required to attend all scheduled classes throughout the day.

  • Campus Safety: Students are not permitted to leave campus during the school day without official permission.

Let’s ensure that Spirit Week and Homecoming are safe, respectful, and memorable celebrations of our Wildcat pride.

Parents and guardians, we need your continued partnership, please check your student’s attendance daily, especially during the third period (lunch hour). Your engagement makes a difference.

As a reminder, there are no classes this Friday and the first quarter ends October 31st, so let’s stay focused on finishing strong and passing all classes this quarter and every quarter.

Together, let’s show what it means to #UnleashTheROAR with excellence, respect, and accountability!

Saludos Familias Wildcat

Principal's Note 9/14/2025

Dear Wildcat Families,

As we move further into September, here are some important updates to keep in mind:

โœ… Attendance Awareness Month – Every day matters, in every class! Please take a moment to read the attendance letter from our Interim Superintendent. We ask for your continued support by checking your child’s attendance every day and in every class period. Attendance is more than just being present at school—it’s about being actively engaged in every subject throughout the day.

A special reminder: please pay close attention to 3rd period attendance (between 11:20 AM – 1:40 PM). Since this is our lunch period, it is especially important that students are accounted for in class both before and after they eat. Accurate attendance during this time helps us ensure student safety and academic accountability.

๐Ÿ“š Stay Connected With Teachers – Continue reaching out to your child’s teachers with any questions about grades or attendance. Working together helps us quickly address concerns and provide support where needed.

๐ŸŒŽ Hispanic Heritage Month – Beginning tomorrow, our World Languages Department has prepared a full month of exciting activities and events. Encourage your student to participate and listen carefully to the Wildcat Morning Announcements for details.

๐Ÿ“… Mark Your Calendar – Schools will be closed for students on Tuesday, September 23rd.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in keeping our Wildcats engaged, present, and connected. When we work together to prioritize attendance and communication, we help every student succeed. ๐Ÿพ

Queridas familias Wildcat,

๐Ÿพ

Principal's Note 8/17/2025

Dear Wildcat Families,

I hope this message finds you well as we begin another exciting school year at Northwestern High School.

For school year 2025-2025, Northwestern High School has been designated by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) as a Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) School. This designation means that specific student groups at our school are performing below state targets, and we are now required to develop and implement an improvement plan focused on closing achievement gaps.

This is not just a compliance requirement—it is an opportunity for us to align our instructional practices, monitor student data more closely, and implement targeted interventions to ensure that every student, in every subgroup, has equitable access to success. Our TSI status will serve as a call to action for us to deepen collaboration, refine our strategies, and accelerate our progress.

To support this important work, we are seeking one additional parent member to join our School Performance Plan (SPP) / TSI Planning Team. This team plays a key role in shaping our strategies for improvement. We meet on Thursdays, and our first meeting will be Thursday, August 28th at 3:45 PM. Your voice and perspective as a parent are invaluable in helping us create meaningful change. After our initial planning meeting, you will receive official notification of our TSI designation with our specific school-wide goals for this school year. If you are interested and available to commit please email me at nkenge.barker@pgcps.org.

Additionally, all grade levels will be sending out grade-level specific information if they have not already done so. Some grade level administrators have already shared links to join their class Canvas pages—please check your email regularly to stay connected. I have linked your student’s grade level administrator and professional school counselor which are assigned according to the first letter in your student’s last name.

Thank you for your continued partnership in making Northwestern a place where every student thrives.

With Wildcat Pride,

NKenge S. Barker
Principal

NKenge S. Barker
Directora
