Two Legacies. One School. A Future Built to SOAR.
The story of Drew-Freeman Middle School is one rooted in education, innovation, perseverance, leadership, and legacy.
Our journey began in 1960 as Francis Scott Key Junior High School. Decades later, in 1995, the school community relocated to the former La Reine High School campus and entered a new chapter, one that would ultimately bring together the legacies of two remarkable leaders: Dr. Jesse L. Freeman Jr. and Dr. Charles R. Drew.
Dr. Jesse L. Freeman Jr. served as principal of Francis Scott Key and was a passionate advocate for education and innovation. He played an instrumental role in establishing a Science, Mathematics, and Technology Center at Francis Scott Key and supporting the expansion of similar opportunities throughout Prince George's County. Following his passing in 1994, members of the school community sought to ensure that his commitment to students, academic excellence, and innovation would never be forgotten.
Dr. Charles R. Drew, a Washington, D.C. native, physician, surgeon, educator, and medical pioneer, transformed modern medicine through groundbreaking advancements in the preservation and storage of blood. His work helped make large-scale blood banking possible during World War II and influenced blood-transfusion practices for generations. Beyond his scientific achievements, Dr. Drew challenged racial discrimination in medicine, including the segregation of donated blood.
In honoring Dr. Drew's groundbreaking pursuit of possibility and Dr. Freeman's unwavering commitment to education, Prince George's County Public Schools brought their names and their legacies together.
And so, Drew-Freeman Middle School was born.
Today, their legacy is more than part of our name. It is part of who we are becoming.
As we continue our journey from Stabilization to Transformation, we carry forward the spirit of two leaders who believed in breaking barriers, expanding opportunities, pursuing excellence, and creating possibilities for those who come next.

This version also ties the school's past directly into its present transformation, so the history doesn't feel like an isolated section of the website. It gives Drew-Freeman meaning: Drew represents innovation and breaking barriers; Freeman represents education and opportunity; today's Falcons carry both forward.
