Reading At Home

• Read bilingual books- this will help both students and parents develop language, vocabulary, and comprehension.
• If parent speaks little English still ask questions to the child to get them thinking about the text. Who? What? Where? When? Why/How?. Even in Spanish, the student can still start to build their comprehension.
• Read every night and encourage enjoyment of reading.
• Practice high frequency/sight words with children.
• Find books read aloud online. PGCPS has Tumblebooks through destiny.pgcps.org
• Find fun ways like games or puzzles to learn new words.
• Ask teacher for extra books.

Things To Do

• Visit a library- A library has bilingual materials and books to read. They also do read alouds and story times that can help parents and children develop language and vocabulary.
• Watch educational videos and programs together
• Listen to books online or through apps
• Say rhymes or sing songs
• Find a tutor/homework helper
• Ask child to tell them what they learned that day
• Reach out to teacher for help
