The Secondary Transition Office supports our students with disabilities as they prepare for life in the adult world by connecting them with various tools and resources to explore higher and technical education, employment, independent living, and meaningful community participation.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) states that the purpose of the legislation is “to ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further employment and independent living.” The law stresses the need for educators, parents, and community agencies to work together to support the student as he or she works toward postsecondary goals and outcomes. Transition services must be provided to assist the student in the attainment of skills necessary to reach his or her postsecondary goals.
