The Maryland State Retirement Agency administers Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Retirement Plan.

Group Life Insurance

  • Group life insurance may be continued for employees whose last 12 years of employment immediately preceding retirement were continuous and consecutive with PGCPS.  The Board will continue to pay the full cost.
  • If your group life insurance benefit as a retiree exceeds $50,000, you must pay taxes on the cost paid by the Board for the amount in excess of $50,000. 
  • Employees who retire July 1, 2006 or prior, your group life insurance is reduced according to a specified reduction schedule.  
  • Employees who retire on or after August 1, 2006, will receive Board-sponsored life insurance in the amount of 25% of their benefit amount on the day preceding retirement, up to a maximum of $25,000.   
  • The Board’s group life insurance benefit is term insurance, which has no accrued cash value. 
  • Through MetLife, you may convert the reduced amount of your group life insurance to an individual life insurance policy. 
  • If you become terminally ill, you may be eligible for the Accelerated Death Benefit (ADB).

  • The Board will continue to contribute towards the cost of your group health insurance. 
  • Your share of the monthly premium may be deducted from your monthly retirement check.  
  • When you or your spouse becomes Medicare eligible, contact the Benefits Administration Office about Medicare coordination information. 

Spouse and/or Dependents of a Deceased Retiree

  • A Spouse and/or Dependents of a Deceased retiree may qualify for continuation of Board-sponsored health insurance benefits.
