This week, PGCPS celebrated two major milestones in its commitment to creating modern, innovative learning environments for students, breaking ground on the new Springhill Lake Elementary School in Greenbelt and the new James E. Duckworth Elementary School in Beltsville.

The ceremonies marked the seventh and eighth (and final) groundbreakings in the award-winning Blueprint Schools Phase II program, an ambitious effort to deliver eight new, state-of-the-art schools across Prince George’s County by 2028.
“These buildings are more than steel, concrete and innovative design,” said Superintendent Dr. Shawn Joseph. “They are places where students will learn, grow, discover their strengths and define success on their own terms.”
The momentum continues this fall as PGCPS prepares to open the doors to two new elementary schools — Margaret Brent Elementary School and Templeton Elementary School — welcoming students into learning environments designed to support collaboration, innovation and academic excellence.
While each new school will have its own unique identity, the purpose behind these investments remains the same: ensuring students have access to high-quality facilities that support their success.
At Springhill Lake Elementary, the new school represents a renewed investment in the Greenbelt community and the students who will fill its classrooms. The modern facility will provide a welcoming environment where students can learn, explore and build the skills needed for their futures.

The new James E. Duckworth Elementary School will honor the legacy of James E. Duckworth, PGCPS’ first Director of Special Education and a visionary educator who believed every child has unique strengths and deserves the opportunity to thrive.
Reflecting that commitment, the school will feature specialized CRI classrooms designed to support students with diverse learning needs and ensure every learner has access to the resources and opportunities needed to succeed.
The Blueprint Schools Phase II program represents a broader commitment to aligning resources, partnerships and long-term planning around what students need to succeed.
