More than 100 athletes competed in the annual district wide Bocce Championship on January 24. Offered in PGCPS since 2012, bocce is one of several corollary sports offered throughout the school year to increase interscholastic athletics participation opportunities for all students, and to build connections between general education and special needs athletes.
An important goal of corollary teams is to achieve an approximately even ratio of participants with and without disabilities.
“Bocce is a competitive sport, but it’s non-contact. So every able body can participate,” said Terri Dendy, Northwestern High School Athletic Director.
Other sports offered include track and field in spring and softball in the fall.
Of the 15 competing schools in various divisions, Surrattsville, Largo, Oxon Hill, Potomac and Suitland high schools will advance to state championships!
