Our school building was built and named initially as Powder Mill Elementary. As an early development center, we were renamed Holly Park at Powder Mill Elementary.
Frances R. Fuchs was employed in 1957 as an Assistant Supervisor of Education. In 1965, she became the Supervisor of Special Education. She held this position until her retirement in 1977 at the age of 70. Frances Fuchs, along with C. Elizabeth Reig, was instrumental in establishing the type and focus of special education programs in this county. She was involved in the late 1950s in the initiation of a program known today as an early childhood center.
Frances Fuchs also involved in training special education teachers through The Catholic University of America. She obtained her Bachelor of Science from Mt. Holyoke College in 1927, her Masters of Education from the University of Maryland in 1958, and her law degree from New York University.
Our school was rededicated in March 1984 and renamed Frances R. Fuchs, a pioneer in special education in Prince George’s County.
