Student Service-Learning Opportunities

 

Year-Round Service Learning Opportunities for Students (Virtual/In-Person):  

  • Invasive Vine Removal at Colmar Manor Park - The Chesapeake Climate Action Network is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting global warming in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. They will be removing invasive vines from trees.  Students who are interested, click this link:   
  • Gateway Farmer's Market - new farmer's market in Brentwood/Mount Rainier.  Students will assist with digital marketing, Spanish translation, and community outreach.  Please contact Ms. Megan Abbot, at 202-286-8765.

  • Strong Families Initiative (SFI) is a family-ministry program that works closely with select parishes, local schools, and community-based organizations.   Student's volunteer activities will include peer mentoring, community projects, resource building, and arts and crafts activities.  Please contact carolina.turcios@cc-dc.org for more information.

  • FEMMIGRANTS UNITED, INC., a humanitarian organization that specializes in immigration and heart healing.  Students can gain service learning hours by cultivating and creating digital content and performing administrative tasks.  Contact davida@femmu.org for more information.

  • Prince George's County Mental Health Champions - The Children's Mental Health Campaign of the Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for some youth volunteers to help with their social media platform.  For more information email pgworkgroupcmhm@gmail.com.

  • Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) Game on! is offering service-learning hours for students.  For more information, please contact Olivia Medina, Outreach Associate @ omedina@jtcc.org.

  • City of Hyattsville, assisting at city events, city-wide trash-debris removals, non-native invasive plant removal, tree and other plantings, tending & weeding food forests, engaging with Senior and residents w/Disabilities, food & diaper distributions, administrative tasks (shredding documents, preparing materials for city events), serving as friendly hosts at city elections, etc.  The city recognizes and participates in national days of service; Contact Colleen Aistis at caistis@hyattsville.org, 301-985-5057.

  • The Therapeutic and Recreational Riding Center is a registered, public, non-profit charity that utilizes horses in therapy treatments for children and adults with special needs.  This SSL opportunity would fit any students looking to work in Therapy, Physical Therapy, Veterinary work, Ferrier work, Barn Management, Non-Profit Establishments, etc.  Contact Victoria Serrano, https://www.trrcmd.org/

  • Disabled Veterans National Foundation - This partnership would include students volunteering their time and efforts to assemble our general and women's signature comfort kits in our warehouse.

  • Luv Michael - Luv Michael is a 501c3 Charity with a mission to train, educate, and employ autistic adults.  Students can earn up to 40 hours of service for completing our program. If you are interested in learning about earning these service hours click here

  • Maryland Responds Medical Reserve Corps 
  • Virtual Volunteer Opportunity - Library of Congress 
    • Volunteer online at By the People, the Library of Congress's crowdsourcing project. By the People invites you to make documents more searchable for everyone by transcribing, reviewing, and tagging digitized images of manuscripts and typed materials from the Library's collections.   • Virtual Volunteer Opportunity - Zooniverse.org

  • M-NCPPC (Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission) Volunteer Opportunities - Want to give back? Volunteer! Opportunities to volunteer with The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission's Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation are almost unlimited. Help out at a one-day special event or assist on an ongoing basis. Students can even earn student service learning hours by volunteering with our organization.

  • University of Maryland Service Opportunity Resource Link - provides access to a variety of service/community opportunities for volunteers.  **Please note that these organizations and opportunities are not necessarily endorsed by PGCPS and that parents are highly encouraged to investigate the opportunities to determine if the organization and/or activity is appropriate for their child.**   If you would like for an organization to go through the process of pre-approval, please contact the Office of Teaching and Learning at 301-952-6395.

  •  Maryland Tutoring Program Needs Volunteers
    • We look for volunteers ages 16 and up interested in working one-on-one with students on Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Riverdale, MD. Latino Student Fund (LSF) staff provides lesson plans and guidance, so all tutors have to bring is enthusiasm and dedication. We have permanent tutors assigned to a student and expected to come every week, and floaters who we call on only when we need extra tutors (which is most weeks).
    • To get involved, volunteers are required to make an appointment for an orientation with LSF staff.  Please contact tutoringpgc@latinostudentfund.org for more information or sign up to be a volunteer at the Latino Student Fund.
