Become a Student Member of the Board of Education

House Bill 1079, provides that the Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) of Prince George’s County may be elected by students in grades 6th-12th that attend a Prince George’s County Public School.

The process for electing the SMOB of Prince George’s County shall be as follows:

  • All students interested in SMOB candidacy must be a current sophomore or junior in a Prince George’s County public school and must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average from the preceding quarter. Each interested applicant must complete and submit the nomination packet to the Office of Student Engagement and School Support by the date specified.
  • The nomination packet must be received in the Office of Student Engagement and School Support no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024. The packet must be emailed to smob.apps@pgcps.org.
  • All students who have submitted a completed application packet by Friday, March 8, 2024 will then stand before the nominating convention (all voting delegates of PGRASG) on Friday, March 15, 2024. The two students receiving the most votes will then proceed to the campaigning stage and county-wide election on or about Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
  • Each student will be asked to research, prepare, and present a five-minute presentation that addresses a current state or county educational issue for the March 12th nominating convention.
