Purpose
The Board of Education is empowered by state law to create advisory councils/committees to advise the Board, facilitate activities and programs in the school system, and recommend possible changes in board policy. This input guides and informs decisions made by the Board.
Furthermore, the Boar d Chair shall select a Board Member to serve as the Board’s liaison after board affirmation taken during Executive Session.
Committees may be ongoing or created for special purposes on a short-term basis. Committees appointed by the Board are subject to the Open Meetings Act. The Committees established by the Board may include, but are not limited to:
- At least one Citizen’s Advisory Committee to provide community advice and assistance on problems, policies of the Board, or any element of the school system. The Committee could include parents, teachers, students, and other citizens as members.
- Similar advisory committees may be established for an individual school or a group of schools within a region. Each citizen advisory committee shall be appointed for a specific purpose and each specific appointment shall be for a specified period and subject to the written acceptance of the appointee.
- Ongoing committees include: Policy, Legal and Legislative, Academic Achievement, Family, Parent and Community Engagement, Finance, Audit and Budget, Board Development and Governance and CEO and Board Evaluation. Each Board committee shall have at least 5 Board members. The Student Board member may sit on two committees as a voting member. All committee meetings are public and must be held in accordance with Board Bylaw 9361. The Board Chair serves as an ex-officio member of all Board committees. A Board member shall serve on at least one (1) committee.
Nothing in this Bylaw shall preclude the appointment of similar standing or ad-hoc citizen advisory committees by the appropriate administrative officer in the school system to facilitate the administration, provided the Board had first been advised of the intended appointment and purposes of any such committee.
