Why Immersion
Why should our family choose Immersion?
- Studies show that students who participate in Immersion programs perform as well as, or better than, their peers on standardized tests.
- Being bilingual has many positive effects on the brain including delaying Alzheimer’s, enhancing problem-solving skills, and boosting creativity.
- Students will become bilingual, bi-literate, and multicultural.
- Being bilingual offers more career opportunities. Bilingual employees can earn 5-20% more per hour.
- Students in PGCPS Immersion Programs have multiple opportunities to qualify to graduate high school with the Maryland State Seal of Biliteracy.
Benefits of an Immersion
Language Proficiency
- Immersion students develop higher levels of proficiency in the language of instruction as compared to traditional second language instructions.
Academics
- Immersion students outperform their monolingual peers in math, science, reading, and writing on local and standardized tests.
English Development
- Learning a second language does not negatively affect the development of the student's first language. Immersion students perform as well or better than traditional monolingual programs on standardized English tests.
College and Career Opportunities
- Multilingual students are more likely to attend college and obtain higher paying jobs. Our students can earn the Maryland State Seal of Biliteracy, providing the opportunity for scholarships and advanced language courses in College.
Cultural Competence and Open Mindedness
- Immersion students not only learn an additional language, but they are also exposed to a multitude of cultures and perspectives and learn to embrace or better understand other's ways of doing or thinking.
