About Home & Hospital Teaching

If your child cannot go to school because of a physical or emotional health condition, Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) can help. This program provides temporary school support so your child can keep learning while they are sick.

How It Works

  • Time Limit: This is a short-term program that lasts for up to 60 days.

  • Where Learning Happens: Lessons take place in the student's home, in the hospital, or at a treatment center.

  • Schoolwork: Your child's regular school will give the home teacher the books and assignments, so your child does not fall behind.

  • How Lessons are Taught: Classes can be online, face-to-face, or a mix of both. This depends on what your child is able to do and the classes they take.

Teaching Hours

  • Full-time students: Will receive at least 6 hours of instruction.

  • Part-time (intermittent) students: Will receive at least 3 hours of instruction.

  • Note: Your child's schedule can be changed if their health needs become more serious.

Important Notes

  • This program does not completely replace a regular school day or the Online Academy.

  • State law requires these teachers to have a college degree, but they might not hold a teaching certificate in the specific subject they are helping your child with.

How to Get Started

If your child cannot attend school due to a physical or emotional condition, contact the School Counselor at your child's school to begin the process.
