Kindergarten

Overview

The following are the Maryland State Department of Education age requirements for enrollment into kindergarten (Education Article, §7-101, Admission of Students, COMAR 13A.08.01.02, Age for School Attendance): Children admitted to the kindergarten program in the public school shall be at least five (5) years old on or before September 1 of the school year in which they apply for entrance. 

Immaturity Waivers

• Parents or guardians who feel that their child(ren) are not mature enough to begin school may request a waiver of one year for this regulation. 
• Waivers are addressed to: Pupil Accounting 14201 School Lane, Room 211, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772 OR Email: pasb.enrollment@pgcps.org
• A written response will be made to your request prior to the first day of school. 

Registration

Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) online registration for the 2026-2027 school year will open for online registration only on April 7, 2026. 

Parents/Guardians may register for kindergarten online. If assistance is needed, please make an appointment with your boundary school. 

Register for Kindergarten

While kindergarten registration may be accepted anytime, it is hoped that families will make a special effort to register early.

Early Entrance

• A parent/guardian may make a request for early entrance into kindergarten if the child turns five (5) years of age between September 2 and October 15, of the school year for which they are requesting early entrance. 
• Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) online applications for Early Entrance to Kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year will be open from April 7, 2026 to June 1, 2026; no exceptions.
• *A Student ID is required to submit an Early Entrance to Kindergarten application. Student ID requests should be made by Wednesday, May 27, 2026 to ensure families are able to complete the Early Entrance Application by June 1, 2026. Student ID requests can be made through ParentVUE.*
• A Parent's Guide to Early Entrance to Kindergarten is available to help families better understand the assessment process. 

• Children being considered for Early Entrance into Kindergarten must show mastery of Prekindergarten standards in reading and math and striving efforts towards Kindergarten standards as measured by assessments administered by Prince George’s County Public School District.
