News Flash: PGCPS Superintendent Search Advances to Next Steps

The Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Superintendent Search Committee announced next steps in the process to identify and appoint the school system's permanent leader.

The search process follows four phases involving the Superintendent Search Committee, County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy, the Prince George's County Board of Education, and the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Carey M. Wright.

The search committee is chaired by Dr. James C. Bell Jr. and includes Prince George's County residents Jennifer Avelar and Gordon L. Sampson, as required by state law. “We remain committed to a transparent, inclusive, and thoughtful process,” said Dr. Bell. “Over the coming weeks, committee members will carefully assess each applicant's qualifications, leadership experience, and vision for our school system. Our goal is to recommend candidates who will lead PGCPS into its next chapter of excellence.”

PoliHire, an executive search firm, is supporting the process with a national recruitment and community engagement effort. A recent community survey asking residents about priorities and qualities for the next superintendent closed on March 27, with more than 8,600 responses received. PoliHire also met with local groups to gather feedback for the superintendent leadership profile.

Applications for the position are due Wednesday, April 22. The search committee, in partnership with PoliHire, will screen applicants, conduct background checks, and interview candidates in early May. Three finalists will be recommended to County Executive Braveboy by Friday, May 8. The County Executive will select a candidate for a four-year term, the Board of Education will finalize the appointment, and the Maryland State Superintendent will provide final approval.

By state law, the County Executive must select the new superintendent by Monday, June 1, and the Board of Education will complete the appointment by Tuesday, June 30.
