Students across Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will celebrate Constitution Day on Tuesday, Sept. 17 in accordance with the American federal holiday and a Prince George's County Board of Education proclamation.
Students at several high schools will stage mini-moot courts around the Bladensburg Peace Cross case (Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission v. American Humanist Association) which was recently decided in the U.S. Supreme Court and considers the First Amendment.
Additionally, lawyers, judges, law students and others will volunteer in more than 40 middle schools to present lessons on voting and to provide students with pocket copies of the Constitution. Partners National Bar Association, J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association, American Constitution Society, Prince George’s County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and others have organized middle school Constitution Day activities.
Commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, Constitution Day highlights the importance of one of the oldest living documents in outlining the ideals of democracy.
Schools and teachers will have access to lesson plans and learning activities on the history of the U.S. Constitution to encourage student engagement.
