The English Language Development (ELD) program provides the English language instruction required of local educational agencies for Multilingual Learners (MLs) in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Students, who are determined to be in sufficient need through language proficiency testing, receive language support from a certified teacher who has extensive knowledge of second language acquisition using effective strategies for meeting their needs.
The Prince George’s County Public Schools ELD/Title III program is designed to provide appropriate, effective English language instruction and to facilitate cultural awareness for MLs, Grades K–12, as required by both federal and state regulations.
ELD curriculum materials have been developed to complement the core instructional program in Prince George’s County Public Schools. ELD classes are designed to integrate the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with content, by utilizing various ELD methodologies and techniques; ELD instruction supports the skills needed to perform satisfactorily on all federal and state-mandated assessments.
ELD instruction should reflect the instructional organization of the Framework for Teaching Lesson Plan Format.
WIDA standards are used in conjunction with Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards to ensure that students acquire the language they need to be successful across the curriculum.
