Boosting Attendance in PGCPS!
Consistent attendance is key to student success and supports academic achievement, fosters relationships, and builds essential life skills.
To emphasize the importance of being present every day, PGCPS launched a districtwide attendance competition. This initiative not only aims to boost attendance but also highlights the link between being in school and thriving academically and socially.

Spotlight on Success
At Glenarden Woods Elementary, excellent attendance stems from strong communication and a supportive culture. Staff promptly reach out to families after three consecutive absences, coordinate with transportation on bus issues, and partner with the school nurse to minimize disruptions for sick students.
“Every Friday, our students wear their GWES swag, showcasing the pride and community spirit that make learning here exciting and rewarding,” Principal Brian Baudoin shared.
Similarly, International High School at Langley Park takes a proactive approach. Principal Eunice Humphrey emphasizes early parent engagement, summer meetings to address challenges, attendance contracts, and advisory celebrations to keep students motivated.
By recognizing and supporting schools, PGCPS continues to prioritize attendance and build a foundation for student success.
Tips for Parents to Support Great Attendance
- Set a Consistent Routine: Make sure your child has a regular bedtime and a morning routine that allows for plenty of time to get ready and get to school on time.
- Keep Communication Open: If your child is going to be absent, communicate with the school as soon as possible. Staying in touch helps everyone stay informed and ensures your child can catch up on missed work.
- Be Supportive: If your child is struggling with school, whether academically or socially, it can sometimes lead to avoidance or reluctance to attend. Reach out to teachers or school counselors for support.
- Celebrate Successes: Recognize and celebrate your child’s good attendance! Positive reinforcement goes a long way in motivating students to stay committed to showing up each day.
