Commit to Renewable Energy Sources for a Net Zero Emissions Future

The newly constructed Ellen Ochoa Middle School is another example of how Prince George’s County Public Schools prioritize sustainability.  Ellen Ochoa Middle School has achieved Priority 3-Mitigation Action item M1: Install Solar Panels on PGCPS property, by installing roof-mounted solar arrays, in the CCAP.  These solar arrays harness clean solar energy, further advancing our resiliency and renewable energy goals within the CCAP.

In addition to rooftop solar, Ellen Ochoa Middle School incorporates a geothermal system for heating and cooling. Some advantages of geothermal energy are:

  • High energy savings
  • Smaller Roof Top Units to minimize structural impact
  • Adequate thermal comfort
  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Simultaneous heating and cooling
  • Elimination of a traditional boiler and chiller

Having geothermal and solar, will make it a highly energy efficient building, creating an opportunity for students to be exposed to technology that conserves energy.
