Distance Learning Guidance: Montessori

 Highlights

  • In a full distance learning model, students will meet with their teachers in real-time to receive daily instruction. This support will allow them to be introduced to concepts with ample opportunities for independent follow up and concept mastery.
  • Professional development will be provided for teachers August 6-7, 2020, to give teachers strategies and instructional support to implement Montessori in a virtual environment.

Programmatic Support

  • Students will meet with their teachers in real-time to receive daily instruction. Students will also be able to access recordings of lessons in order to revisit any necessary content.
  • The Early Learning Office has acquired additional resources and services to support Montessori teachers during distance learning. These resources include:
    • Montessori Lead Teachers to create Montessori curriculum documents
    • Montessori consumables for students to have Montessori-like materials at home
    • Packaged school supplies for each student
  • All of the Montessori programs have a Montessori coordinator and Montessori Lead Teacher representative available to support teachers as needed.
  • Each school will hold a virtual parent orientation about pertinent school year information (dates to pick up supplies and consumables, daily schedules for students, additional resources, etc.)
  • Intervention teachers are established within each school’s program to provide support for classroom teachers in differentiation for students with additional needs.

Program and Scheduling Considerations

The Early Learning Office is making the following recommendations (based on Montessori principles) to ensure that students receive high-quality instruction and opportunities to master concepts independently:

  • Whole class gatherings are built into the schedule (as they would be during face-to-face learning) to promote community building and collaborations.
  • The three-hour work cycle is preserved to allow for small group instruction, independent work, and whole-class lessons. In an effort to maximize instruction, and minimize screen time for the youngest children (Primary), the three-hour work cycle was not established.
  • Three-year-old students will be phased in by the end of September. Students will be able to observe prior to becoming active participants in daily instruction.
  • Students are given the opportunity to reflect on their work throughout the day
  • Individual meetings are recommended to ensure differentiation, collaboration, and accountability for each child
  • Creative Arts classes are embedded in a weekly rotation to ensure students have the opportunity for live instruction in each content area.
  • Consideration was given to intervention services and professional school counseling. Students may receive pull out services during work periods, in addition to scheduled intervention time.
