Distance Learning Guidance: Language Immersion

Highlights

  • In a full distance learning model, students will meet with their teachers in real-time, in various sessions, to receive direct instruction. This support will allow them to master language and content simultaneously.
  • Professional development will be provided for teachers to model oral communication strategies through interpersonal, intrapersonal, and presentation on August 26, 2020.
  • Small group instruction will be provided to K-5 students a minimum of 3 days per week.

Programmatic Support

  • Students will meet with their teachers in real-time to receive direct instruction, they will also be able to access recordings of lessons in order to revisit content they would like to review.
  • The Immersion Office has acquired additional resources and services to supplement our current instructional resources through our grant writing/inclusion efforts (see Resources for Distance Learning).
  • French Immersion:  Lalilo, an adaptive program to provide additional phonics and reading comprehension independent practice for all K-1 students--struggling, on grade level, or advanced readers.
  • Spanish Immersion: Imagine Learning Espanol K-2, an adaptive program to provide phonics and reading comprehension independent practice for all students--struggling, on grade level, or advanced readers.
  • Chinese Immersion: The textbooks adopted have interactive digital pieces and additional readings available for students.
  • Parents will have a virtual orientation meeting by each school to share schedules, how to access textbook and ancillary resources, materials pick up dates, etc.
  • Each Immersion program K-5 has a literacy intervention teacher provided by the Immersion Programs Office that works with students identified by teachers through the RTI process for 6-week rotational small group instruction to assist struggling readers.  Small group instruction for special education and TAG students is recommended in order to maximize instructional time using Immersion, TAG, and special education instructional strategies to reinforce and enrich our students’ skills.

Program and Scheduling Considerations

  • The Immersion Office is making the following recommendations (based on models)  in order to ensure that all four skills are taught and students have the opportunity to practice those skills:

Full Immersion Language Arts (K-1):

  • Immersion Language Arts whole group 30 minutes with small group & 1 Dualclasswork/independent practice rotations 30 minutes (small groups min. 15 minutes each at least 3 days/week)

Full Immersion (2nd-5th) & Dual Language (K-5):
